grocery bag dispenser

hi friends...

I'm down in Virginia, eagerly awaiting the arrival of a sweet baby nephew. Just wanted to recommend a lovely tutorial over at Make It and Love It (great blog!).

I like to re-use shopping bags, and for a long time, my broom closet has looked like this:

But now it looks like this:
Yay! Much better. This tutorial was easy, fast, and so functional. She has oodles of other fab tutorials as well.

Have a great weekend!

Another page finished. Whew! When this book is done, I am taking a long vacation from hand-sewing.

This page focuses on counting, matching numbers, and manipulating snaps.

There are also a couple of flaps with surprises underneath.

All of the numbers and ducks are attached to the page with snaps.

I'm heading out of town to visit my family and to get some cuddle time in with a new nephew ... so this will be the only quiet book page this week. I'll check in with a different project in a couple of days. :)

I realize it will be a long time before Oscar can manipulate buttons or spell his name, but it is never too early to practice, right?

All of the felt letters are buttoned to a coordinating letter that is sewn onto the page.

Confession: I secretly pine for the "Your Baby Can Read" program. Does anyone have an extra $200 laying around? And has anyone tried this program with success? Because the infomercial has me 100% convinced. :) I am a sucker.

UPDATE: oops ... I think I should clarify. I'm not actually buying that program. Infomercials are just so tempting sometimes though! I am way too frugal and plan to teach Oscar the old fashioned way.

When I saw this post about a felt aquarium over at Purl Bee, I knew that I had to make an ocean page for the quiet book.

I used Molly's templates for all my fish, except the jellies. I got the idea to use ric rac for those, which was much easier and more stable - I don't have much wool felt on hand, and the craft stuff just doesn't hold up well when it is cut into thin strips. All of the fish have a velcro backing, so they can be moved around.

I also made one of the cute pieces of coral, but it somehow got lost in the sewing process. Sad! Hopefully it will turn up, and I'll add it to the page.

The "sand" is a felt pocket and the seaweed plants are made up of a funky ribbon that I clipped apart. I also threw in a raffia/bead trim for another type of plant and to add texture. My friend Megan gave me the trim a year ago, and I never thought I'd find a use for it. :)

Check out the Purl Bee for some awesome felt aquarium templates!

beep, beep. Page 5 is finished, and I have to say ... this book is a labor of love. Few craft projects have kept me up late (late!) for so many nights in a row. But I am really enjoying it.

This little robot friend has elastic arms and legs for tugging and a zipper pocket for storing secrets. Maybe even secret treats.

Here is my barnyard themed page 4. The embroidered windmill took a lot longer than expected, so this page cost me two nights.

I added a bit of texture by using white velvet ribbon on the barn doors (which are felt) and brown suede for the "trough" inside. When Oscar opens the doors, he'll find three little felt finger puppets.

I am really digging this page. My mom gave me a lot of good suggestions for this one. Someone asked in the previous post where I am getting the ideas for my pages. So far, I have come up with them on my own (with a little collaboration on this one with mom).

I am a spur-of-the-moment type of crafter, so when the idea pops into my head, I just start cutting fabric. I use the materials I have on hand and just wing it.

Tomorrow I'm planning to do a robot page - it will go well next to the spaceship page, don't you think?

A third page done ... I am so sleepy. On this page, baby can count down and send the rocket to the moon. It travels along a little ribbon so it won't get lost along the way.

quiet book, page 2

Page two is inspired by verse 2 of "In the Leafy Treetops."

This page is made with felt, quilting cotton, ribbon, a button and embroidery thread. Plus ...

... a little surprise for Oscar to find. Did you know that you can print pictures on regular fabric? It isn't quiet as vibrant as I'd like, but does the trick. Here's how you do it:

1. Cut a piece of freezer paper to normal printer paper dimensions (8 1/2 x 11 inches)
2. Iron a piece of white cotton fabric to the waxy side of the freezer paper
3. Arrange the photos you would like to print in a word document
4. Put your "fabric paper" in the printer, freezer paper side up, and print
5. Peel the freezer paper off the fabric
6. Heat-set with a hot iron and you are ready to use it in a fun project.

Since this is going in a baby project, and therefore very likely to be slobbered to death, I also covered my printed fabric in iron-on vinyl. I don't know if the ink would bleed without it, but I didn't want to take any chances.

I also sewed a piece of plastic inside the brown center of the flower flap, so it makes a pleasant (and still quiet) crinkly sound.

In response to some of your questions from the first post:
  • The background of the page is just plain quilting cotton. Actually, it is a pillow sham that I cut up.
  • I cut my white fabric into five 12x24 inch pieces. This will give me ten 11 1/2 inch square pages after seam allowance.
  • I am using a patterned piece of cotton cut to the same dimensions for the cover and plan to put a layer of very thin batting under the cover (and possibly between all the pages, I haven't decided).
  • The font I used for my text is called Joyful Juliana.
  • I'll put a set of templates together when I finish the book. I wish I had time to do it now, but I am rushing to get the book done as it is. Not a lot of time to spare because I'm moving! Eek.

I'm excited to be starting a project that has been on my radar for a while. I've always wanted to make Oscar a quiet book for church, and he is just getting to the age that I think he will enjoy it.

Tonight I finished my first page:

The first two pages are inspired by a favorite Primary song that I sing to Oscar every morning when he wakes up. Hopefully he will enjoy all the textures. It always makes him smile.

I machine sewed the felt tree, hand sewed the bird, and embroidered the writing. To keep the embroidery tidy, I printed out the text using a favorite font and traced it onto the fabric using a water soluble pen. I don't trust my own handwriting. :)

So, this is the first of ten pages to be completed. My goal is to do one page a day ... starting after Easter.

fabric easter buckets

Happy almost-Easter! I came across this adorable basket on Distressed last weekend and had to make a few myself.

Using the fabric bucket tutorial on Vintage Ric Rac as my guide, I made a bunny and a chick. Two changes I made to her instructions: my buckets are 8 1/2 inches tall (instead of 5 1/2 in) and I added two 10 inch handles. (Oh, and the other obvious change being faces, ears, wings, etc).

Need more inspiration/step-by-step tutorials? Check out the fabric baskets at Create Studio or Pink Penguin.
